The Medical Library at the University Hospital Basel (USB) – Impact Unmasked: The Truth Behind H-Index and Journal Rankings
This short lecture introduces bibliometrics, the application of statistical methods to measure scientific output and impact. We cover widely used metrics like the H-Index and Journal Impact Factor (JIF), highlighting their limitations and alternatives, including SNIP and Eigenfactor. The role of bibliometrics in evaluating scientific collaboration and trends, along with its ethical considerations, will also be discussed. Practical insights on using bibliometric tools for research evaluation are provided, drawing on services offered by the University of Basel.
