BMJ open access article quota

The article quota for free open access publishing has been exhausted since the 2nd of December 2024.

Thanks to a Read & Publish agreement between the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries and BMJ, members of the University of Basel can make use of the open access option in hybrid journals free of charge.  However, the limited article quota in the BMJ agreement has already been used up due to high demand.

The publisher has now activated a workflow in which an Article Processing Charge (APC) will be charged for open access publishing (subscription-based, without open access, is free of charge). As an alternative, it is recommended that researchers publish their articles without the open access option and upload the accepted manuscript to the UNIverse research portal of the University of Basel: https://universe-intern.unibas.ch/.

An extension of the agreement with BMJ from 2025 is currently being negotiated by the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries.

The 25% discount on APCs for Gold OA journals and BMJ Case Reports, which is received by University of Basel authors, is not affected.
