Coronavirus: Use of the libraries from Monday 6 July 2020
Reading rooms and study areas
- The reading rooms are open for everyone again, a registration is not necessary. In order to comply with distance rules, a limited number of study spaces is available in the reading rooms and study areas.
- The Special reading rooms of the University Main Library and the University Business and Economics Library – Swiss Economics Archive can still only be used once an appointment has been made. Details. The number of work spaces is limited.
- Users may enter the libraries when the traffic lights in the entrances are set to green.
Opening hours

Borrowing
- The open stacks and journals stacks of the University Main Library are closed to the public due to renovation works from 25. august until the end of november, but items can be ordered during this time and will be made available by library staff for collection. Items can be ordered via the catalogue and can be collected from the lending desk (temporary location: ground floor, Room 008.2) after receipt of a collection notice.
- The openly accessible area of the University Business and Economics Library is again accessible. You must fetch items yourself and then have them issued to you at the circulation desk.
- Mailing fees have been reduced to CHF 5.- per item until 31 July 2020. Thereafter you will be charged the usual CHF 12.- per item. Due to the special circumstances, mailing fees from 16 March to 7 June 2020 were waived completely.
Courier
- The Basel courier and the IDS courier are operating as usual again. Ordering and delivery options are displayed during the ordering process in swissbib Basel Bern depending on the pick-up locations selected.
Returns
- Items can be returned at the counter again or (where available) via the book return boxes.
Loan periods – reminder process active again since 15 June
- From 15 June, the usual loan periods again apply for all the libraries of the Basel Library Network that offer online borrowing.
- Between 16 March and 12 June, no reminders were sent and no reminder fees were charged. Reminder fees generated before 16 March remain unchanged.
- The reminder levels for all loans that would have been due between 9 March and 15 June 2020, have been reset. This means that the reminder process will begin again with a free reminder, even for loans that were already in the reminder process, but that could not be returned by their due date.
- Due to capacity reasons, the due dates of items borrowed from the larger libraries will be continuously increased by one day at a time at random:
- - Basel: University Main Library, University Business and Economics Library, Bibliothek Altertumswissenschaften, Library of the Faculty of Law, Kunstmuseum Basel Library, Pädagogisches Zentrum
- - Bern: Von Roll Library and the University Library Storage Facility, Basisbibliothek Unitobler, Library of Law JBB, Mittelstrasse Library, PH Institut
- The reminder process for all other libraries will start again as normal.
Copy orders
- CHF 5.- per 20 pages will still be charged for copy orders.
E-media
- Use the online-resources of the libraries, i.e. electronic media (e-journals, e-books, databases)
- The DigiLit Plus service will no longer be offered. For the DigiLit service, the limit is again 20 articles per Workspace.
Copy centre
- Self-service copiers and scanners are accessible again. The staffed copy centre in the main library is closed. Ring binding is unfortunately not possible.
Literature searching and Internet stations
- A limited number of workstations for literature searching and Internet use are available.
