Reading rooms University Main Library
In addition to the study areas and openly-accessible areas, about 400 work spaces are available in reading rooms in the University Main Library.
Main reading room
The main reading room with a gallery has 201 work spaces as well as a non-lending collection of reference works of about 30’000 volumes. An overview of how the literature is arranged in the reading room is available on the orientation board at the entrance to the reading room.

Small reading room
In the small reading room, accessible via the main reading room, 75 work spaces are available.
The allocation of shelf compartments for book storage for a limited period of time requires a written application (with indication of purpose and required time period) to: info-ub@clutterunibas.ch

Special reading room
The special reading room in the department Historical Holdings has 20 work spaces where manuscripts, bequests/private archives, works from the historical holdings published before 1900, works from the special collections, as well as more recent non-lending materials (large formats, many interlibrary loans, etc.) may be consulted.

Researchers’ reading room
Access to the researchers’ reading room with its 23 work spaces is available on request to lecturers, (emeritus) professors and staff of the University of Basel who are working on a research project that requires intensive use of the holdings of the University Library Basel. Researchers external to the University of Basel may also be granted access if possible. Contact: info-ub@unibas.ch

Journals reading room
In the journals reading room, which is accessible via the main reading room, 50 work spaces are available, including 20 computer work spaces for members of the University of Basel.
Shelves are arranged according to subject and contain issues from the current year of printed journals, which may be used on site.

Newspaper reading room
The newspaper reading room is accessible via Floor 2 in the open stacks, has the same opening hours as the open stacks and is intended for use by those who wish to consult the non-lending newspapers stored in this area of the open stacks. In addition, the most recent issues of the Basler Zeitung, as well as other daily and weekly newspapers, are located here.
There are 8 desks and 2 large sofas available for users.

Basiliensia reading corner
Behind the entrance to the main reading room is the Basiliensia reading corner with 11 work spaces and a lounge area.

Before you leave, but at the latest a quarter of an hour before the reading rooms close, tables should be completely cleared and books and journal issues should be packed away.
